|Both government officials and advertisers have urged the tech giant to review its advertising practices and threatened it with regulation and advertiser boycotts.
Once the news emerged that ads for some organizations had been placed next to extremist material on Google services, a major global marketing company Havas pulled all its advertising spending with the tech giant, while MPs threatened to put the legislation on the table if social media companies fail to effectively self-regulate.
The UK government joined a range of such outfits as the Guardian, BBC and Transport for London in pulling ads from Google and YouTube, and summoned Google to the Cabinet Office. Some MPs wrote to Google, accusing it of “profiting from hatred.” They also accused Google, Facebook and Twitter of “commercial prostitution” a few days ago. They claimed that despite reassurances that the online giants did not allow hate speech or terrorist content to be monetized, it appeared not quite so. It turned out that government ads and major brands ads were still being placed on inappropriate and hate-filled websites, which means that Google and the sites’ owners were profiting from hatred.
Google was asked to refund money to the government and other advertisers and provide explanation why and how it has happened. It looks like the companies could face many refund requests. The industry experts believe that the tech firms will issue such refunds in the form of credits to advertisers if they made an error placing an advert and concluded that the content was sufficiently offensive to terminate the publisher’s account.
The MPs claimed that if social media companies fail to do their own self-regulation, they will have to face proper legislation, pointing at the example of Germany, where social media companies could face fines of up to €50m in case of failure to delete offending content within a week.
At the same time, Google has been facing growing commercial pressure: for example, French advertising group Havas has become the first of the major global marketing companies to pull all its advertising spending from Google platforms after Google’s failure to provide specific reassurances that their video or display content is classified either quickly enough or with the correct filters.
